How to choose the right type of pruning tool?

Three main points for choosing the right type of tool:

  1. Pruners are ideal for cutting branches thinner than one’s thumb.
  2. Loppers are perfect for cutting branches thinner than one’s wrist.
  3. When cutting thicker branches, use a pruning saw.

How to choose the right type of pruning tool?

Pruning shears

Pruning shears are used to cut thinner (less than 2,6 cm in diameter) branches from shrubs and trees. There are two types of pruners: bypass and anvil.

Note! Do not try to cut thick branches with pruners because the cutting point will not be neat, and recovery becomes more difficult.

Bypass pruners

Bypass pruning shears are best suited for living trees. They have two cutting blades (as in a pair of scissors). The outcome is clean, neat, and the cutting point heals quickly.

Anvil pruners

Anvil pruning shears are best suited for dead growth and dry wood. They have a single cutting blade that slices through the dry branch to a flat, anvil-shaped part. They should not be used to prune fresh wood, because branches crush easily against the anvil-shaped part, and the cutting point heals slowly.

Loppers

Loppers enable you to easily cut branches with a thickness of more than five centimeters from larger shrubs and trees. Because of their long handles, loppers are also ideal for pruning thinner branches. There are two types of loppers: bypass and anvil.
